Pack for storage with retrieval and condition checks in mind. Items that will remain boxed for weeks need a clear inventory, suitable protection and compliance with the storage provider's rules.

Start with the rules

Request the prohibited-items list and packing requirements before filling boxes. Do not include food, liquids, batteries or other potentially restricted items without checking. Clean and dry belongings appropriately before storage.

Number containers and record their contents in a private list. Put things needed soon into a separate group that stays with you, unless easy retrieval is specifically part of your storage arrangement.

Protect identification and condition

Photograph large furniture and significant existing marks before handover. Label dismantled components so they can be matched later, and keep hardware attached only in a way that does not damage surfaces.

Ask how the provider wants boxes stacked or prepared; do not guess load limits. Keep essential documents, medication and irreplaceable valuables outside the stored shipment when practical.

Should I seal everything in plastic?

Use materials appropriate to the item and storage conditions. Ask the provider or manufacturer when unsure; one wrapping method is not suitable for every material.

What should I check on redelivery?

Reconcile container numbers, inspect important items and record any concern before discarding packaging that may help explain it.
