For fragile belongings, agree who packs them and identify items requiring special handling before the estimate is finalized. “Fragile” on a box is not a substitute for appropriate materials and a clear packing scope.
Separate ordinary breakables from special items
Group dishes and glassware separately from artwork, unusual ornaments or high-value equipment. Tell the provider about items that have delicate joints or cannot support pressure on a particular surface.
If packing yourself, prevent pieces from touching and movement inside the container. Use suitable protective materials and do not overload the box. Ask for item-specific handling advice when you are unsure rather than improvising with an unsuitable container.
Record the starting condition
Photograph each important item and note existing chips or scratches. Keep purchase information when available. Ask how the provider wants fragile or valuable items declared and how a damage report should be submitted.
Carry irreplaceable small personal items yourself when practical. Keep them separate from boxes intended for the crew so they cannot be loaded accidentally.
Does self-packing change a damage claim?
It may affect the facts and contract terms. Ask the provider before booking; this guide does not promise coverage or determine liability.
Should I unpack fragile boxes first?
Inspect them reasonably soon after arrival and keep relevant packing materials if you discover damage that needs documenting.
